How we do things
We have our own way of doing things. Read below to see what we expect from you if you follow lessons with us, and what you can expect from us.
Wear appropriate clothing
It’s forty degrees in the yoga room, so do not dress too warm! Loose-fitting clothes is not suitable for Bikram Yoga: it sticks to your body and, moreover, we cannot accurately see whether you are performing the posture correctly . The best clothes are stretchy shorts or athletic leggings and a sport top or camisole for ladies. Men wear running shorts or swimwear. Please refrain from wearing your underwear as a substitute for yoga shorts. We sell all kinds of yoga clothes in our yoga shop in the studios. There must be something for you!
Also keep your ‘inner balance’
Every class feels different; sometimes it can be difficult and heavy. Sometimes it feels physically challenging and sometimes emotionally challenging. Part of your yoga journey is to just notice yourself in these classes, postures and moments and just breath and be still. Do not run, do not fight, just breathe and you will feel better. You will be surprised at how accomplished you feel when you get through these moments with grace and calmness. This is a valuable tool to also help you with your life outside the yoga room. This is where your yoga practice becomes much more than just a physical exercise program.
“If you really want to experience the benefits of Bikram Yoga, put time and energy into it. Come to class as often as possible and judge for yourself what it does to you.”
– Harijs, teaching since 2013
Good morning!
No better way to start the day than with Bikram Yoga! We know it’s hard to set the alarm that early, but your body and mind will keep thanking you through out the day. Never mind your trip to the studio is a treat as the streets are so still.
Do not eat at least two hours before class
Bikram Yoga is best done on an empty stomach. Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. It is better for you and your yoga practice to drink water before and after the lesson, not during. If you take class at 6:30 in the morning, it does not mean you have to get up in the middle of the night to have breakfast. You can easily follow the lesson without breakfast, yoga takes away any hunger pains and gives you the energy you need.
Be on time
We lock the door 5 minutes BEFORE the lesson starts. Arrive at least 15 minutes in advance so you can dress and quietly set down your mat in the yoga room and relax before class. On time means you are changed and in the yoga room on your yoga mat BEFORE the teacher comes into turn on the lights and start the lesson. If the door is already locked, you are too late and the teacher is inside teaching class. Especially for your first lesson arrive at least 20 minutes in advance. We don’t want you to start your first lesson feeling rushed and we want to take time to share some important information with you. We understand some people run late once in a while but if it is a habit you might not be allowed into the lesson. Part of being a good yogi is being respectful of the time of others, this is includes all the other students coming to take class and the teacher who is giving the class.
Register for classes
Reservations are required for all classes. Please make your reservations using our website or MyYoga app. Make time for your yoga! Please note we have a late cancel and no-show policy. We want to ensure everyone who wants to take class is able to. If you cancel less than 8 hours before class you will receive a late fee. Please refer to the policy in your booking confirmation emails. Please respectful of other people’s time, it is part of being a good yogi.
“Do not try to get into the postures very deeply from the beginning. Instead, come to class often, so that you can gradually build up the depth.”
– Lydia, teaching since 2003
Use the lockers
Currently our changing rooms are closed as we cannot keep proper social distancing. Therefor, bring all your belongings with you to the yoga room. Arrive in your yoga attire. There are lockers in the changing rooms where you can store in your belongings. In Den Haag the lockers require a €1 coin, which you get back after using the locker. We are not responsible for any lost or stolen items, therefor we recommend using the lockers. Our front door is locked while you are taking class.
Where to place your mat
Place your mat between the designated hooks and covering the number. Part of our COVID regulations to keep everyone spaced apart is assigned spots in the yoga room. When you arrive we will give you a card that tells you which numbered spot to go to in the yoga room and where to place your belongings.
Better to NOT drink water during class
Drinking water is not prohibited during the Bikram Yoga class, but we strongly encourage and recommend you not to. This is not only because your digestive system is triggered and you therefore create more problems than help yourself. It is also a matter of focus and discipline: are you able to keep your focus on the yoga postures and not be distracted? Fixing your towel, wiping away the sweat, fidgeting with your outfit; these are things that distract you from your focus and your breath. You are attempting to have continuous and uninterrupted focus through out the entire class.
“If you exercise frequently, you improve your physical, mental and emotional health enormously.”
– Darek, teaching since 2009
Savasana
The final savasana of the Bikram Yoga class is an important posture. Here, you let the yoga settle into your body and mind and take a moment of silence, an invaluable part of our busy lives. Observe here that some of your fellow yogis may want to remain a little longer in the room. When you do leave, move slowly and quietly being aware of those around you. If you leave a big puddle on the floor please clean it up and consider using 2 towels. Make as little noise as possible when leaving.
Lost and Found
Did you lose something? There is a good chance that we found it. Found jewelry and other valuables we keep at the reception desk. In the locker room you’ll see a drawer under the towels bin where we store lost and found clothes and toiletries. Mats are found in the bins at the door. Please pick up your gear on time, we keep the objects found only two weeks.
