What is best to do about food and drink?
Drink plenty of water throughout the day; before and after the lesson, not during the lesson. With an empty stomach, you can better focus on your yoga and breathing. It is best to eat nothing two hours before the start of the lesson to be sure you have an empty stomach.
What to bring with you?
Bring your own mat and a towel, due to COVID regulations we do not rent them. If you bring your own mat, it must be a proper yoga mat not a camping mat, foam pad or fitness pad. If you bring your own towel, it must be large enough to cover your mat. We also sell yoga mats and towels that are suitable for hot yoga.
What to wear?
Wear clothes that you can easily sweat in, it’s 40 degrees inside! Women wear shorts or leggings and a sports bra or a tank top. Men wear running shorts or swimwear. Please refrain from wearing your underwear as a substitute for yoga shorts. When in doubt, ask us for advice. We also sell yoga clothing in various styles and brands, all specifically designed for use in Bikram Yoga or hot yoga.
What to do before class starts?
Before the lesson starts you can already go in the yoga room. Place your mat between the hooks and covering the number of your designated spot that you have been assigned at the front desk. Lie down or sit on your mat, whatever you find comfortable. It is not necessary to do extra postures before class, enjoy the stillness. Breathe in the warm air and relax. Being on time for class means that you are in the yoga room and on your yoga mat ready to go BEFORE the teacher comes in to start class.
How do you know what to do in class?
The teacher tells you exactly what to do. All you have to do is pay attention to the instructions and copy the people around you. And if you can’t do something yet, don’t worry, keep trying, only go as far as can and stay there to hold still. Over time you will see how quickly it changes and improves. We all have to start somewhere!
What if I want to take a break?
Don’t worry, if you feel like you cannot go on; simply kneel down on your knees, stay focused, look into the mirror and concentrate on your breath, in and out through your nose. Soon you will feel better and ready to join again. It is not expected that you do everything on your first few classes.
Our advice is to stay in the room during class. If you really feel unwell, let us know so we can help. Moreover, it is quite common for the first few lessons to feel all sorts of strange things.
What do to after the lesson?
The last posture of the series is savasana where you lie on the ground and close your eyes. Stay after the end of the lesson and just relax for a few minutes, so your body has a chance to process everything you did. Drink plenty of water after class or try an organic coconut water or fresh cold pressed juice.
Enjoy how you feel after class. The rest of the day or evening you will relax and feel good and most likely sleep very well.
If you have questions about the postures or the effects that Bikram Yoga has on you, feel free to speak with the teacher at the end of the lesson or send us an e-mail.
When to come back for your second lesson?
Our advice is to follow your next lesson within 24 hours. This is best for your muscles, and actually for you overall. The positive effect of Bikram Yoga is only strengthened when you come more often.
See you again soon!
